i am an ally

For most of my life,  I've grown up with two aunts.  (Ashley, lots of people have two aunts, you say?)  Well mine are married.  (It's pretty awesome to be able to say that.)  Growing up, I never saw them as any different than the rest of us. I know them hand working, successful women who are funny, open, and incredibly loving. They're people who have the ability to bring a smile to just about anyone's face.  They hug you and you just know how much they mean it.  Their relationship is one that I hope to have with a partner of my own.  I adore them both.

I am an ally for them.

I am an ally for my best friends across the US, many of whom face discrimination daily because of their choice to love who they love, to dress how they're comfortable, to BE the people they were born to be, even in places that are not always supportive.

I am an ally for them.

This Tuesday, thousands of people across America showed their support for equality. My heart nearly exploded with pride for the wash of red that I saw across my Facebook newsfeed, and I found myself clicking back on throughout the day far more times than I would generally, just to see who else had taken a stand. That's not to say that I didn't also see some posts and pictures that let a little air out of my tires. It's easy to say that those people you see on TV are misguided and full of hate, but it's much harder to see the people you know and respect spouting the same backwards rhetoric.  But they were a minority.  And that's a win in Missouri.

Being liberal in the Midwest isn't always easy.  Being a  female, liberal, tree hugging, gay loving, athiest in the Midwest sometimes feels impossible.  But there are other times, times that are coming more frequently, when I find myself realizing that the tides are changing.  It's incredibly refreshing.

  2. This is so sooo lovely!! Also proud to be a female, liberal, tree hugging, gay loving, atheist! (Although I imagine it is slightly easier where I am in Canada; still there are days where I am very defeated.)
