Holiday Bow Tutorial

Thursday, November 29, 2012

Christmas is a big holiday here in the Ozarks, and my family loves to go all out!  This was my first year back home in a few years, so it was especially fun for my mom and I to bring out all of the goodies.  (We may or may not have started decorating before Thanksgiving...I know, I know, but we were excited!)  My parents have recently renovated most of their house to look very rustic and outdoorsy, so we had a little bit of tweaking to do with the current decorations to match the new theme.  One of the easiest ways we've learned to change themes is to make the christmas wreaths and trees have interchangable bows, and with something like 18 wreaths and 3 trees...we have lots of practice making them.  The good thing is that these bows are SO easy to make and look like a million bucks. Here's how we made them....

You'll need:
Ribbon (I prefer the ribbon with wiring in the edges so that it can easily hold any shape.)  We were making rather large bows, so we used about 3 yds per bow, but smaller ones would take much less.
Floral Wire
Scissors
Any extra embellishments you wish to add, we used everything from vintage bells, raffia, pine cones, and  flowers.  The sky is the limit!

1. Pull out a few feet of ribbon to work with.  I don't cut a set size off the spool because every bow is a little different!

2-7.  Make a loop about six inches from the end of the ribbon.  Twist.  Repeat.  Seriously, that's basically it.  SO easy right?  I like to make a loop, twist, then make the next loop on the opposite side, working in a circle until you've got a full bow.  The wired ribbon makes this a snap because it secures itself as you go, if you're not using wired ribbon, you're going to want to use a lot more of the floral wire to secure each loop.

8 & 9. Once you've made your bow to your preferred size, cut a piece of the floral wire (about a foot,) and run it through the front of the bow (so the ends are in back) twisting throughout the loops so that it's nice and secure.  Leave the long ends sticking out the back.

10. Cut bow off of spool.  Cut a second piece of ribbon (about 3 ft.) and fold in half.  These are the "tails" of your ribbon. Wrap wire from bow around tail piece until secure.  The remaining wiring can be used to attach your bow to whatever object you wish!  Fluff bow as necessary.  Voila!

This year we worked with a lot of burlap and plaid and I love how they turned out!  I'd love to know what your holiday decorating involves, let me know in the comments!  xoxo Fearsy

Candy Colored Skies

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

Sorry about the sudden dearth of posting y'all, I've been super sickly and haven't bothered to leave my bed for the most part.  I haaaaate being sick!  I'm such a baby.  Anyhoo, during one of my few non-bed moments this evening, I stepped outside to let the dogs out and saw this.  So I immediately had to dash inside for my camera to TRY and capture how beautiful the skies were.  These little moments make the fact that it's dark outside by five bearable.  So pretty.

Sorry about the belated happy post this week y'all, I ended up with NO time between Thanksgiving and going to Arkansas that this post just didn't come together until I got home yesterday. I hope y'all had the best holiday weekend! Mine was full of delicious food and duck hunting (my first trip with the family!) and I had the BEST time. Who knew? I'll be a duck commander before you know it. Here's a couple of snapshots from my phone, running (not walking!) the Turkey Trot 5K and watching Vanna retrieve ducks down in Arkansas. She was so excited! (Also if you want to see more, follow me on Instagram @Afearsy :)

UnBEARable...

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

// Sweater: Dillards  // Dress: H&M // Tights: Urban Outfitters // Oxfords: Aldo //

I'm not gonna lie y'all, I basically planned an outfit post the second I saw this sweater at the store. And I've been using every possible bear associated pun I can think of while wearing it. I'm that girl. Anyhoo...I got all dressed this morning, pulled my hair into a bun and snapped approximately 200 photos. Then I got inside, plugged my little camera in, and was greeted with about 198 photos of me with my eyes closed, out of focus, or basically looking like the most awkward person ever. EVER. The picture above was seriously the only one I even half liked, and it's super blown out because the sun just had to come out full force. Sigh. I'm possibly considering reshooting, just so that I can share this glorious sweater in all of it's splendor, but I thought it's sometimes nice to show y'all that it's okay if these posts don't look as perfect as those we see on the major blogs... it's important to get out there and show off the fabulous (and awkward) YOU.(How do you guys come up with new poses? I think I have a solid three that I use.) I even included a little gif for y'all showcasing what can only be assumed to be an out of body experience while shooting... I have no words. xoxo Fearsy

// Reading // I'm still on my epic journey of finishing the Game of Thrones series, currently on book three, A Storm of Swords.  This book is EPIC y'all, full of so many twists and turns that I'm constantly calling people who've read it to exclaim, "WTF can you believe that happened?!?"  The only issue is the fact that it may sincerely take me another year to finish the last two and a half books, they're CRAZY long. But so worth it.  (On a side note, I also took a small break to read the new Nora Roberts...you know i love her, and it was sappy and wonderful as always. Gotta keep it real with you guys...)

// Watching // Oh my gosh, everything.  Being in early retirement has me being able to watch and rewatch so many wonderful shows!  Sons of Anarchy has me constantly in a state of anxiety/horror/tears (um, OPIE?!? I was so distraught.)  I'm also loving Homeland, Claire Danes is incredible in it and it competely keeps you on your toes the entire time.  You've gotta watch it.  Lastly, I'm still guilty pleasure watching all of the Real Housewives, (though my favorite lately is Miami, they're so ridiculous,) and the Voice... competition shows get me.

// Listening to // I've had the new Avett Brothers album the Carpenter on heavy rotation it's so beautiful!  (The line If I live the life i'm given, I won't be scare to die in 'The Once and Future Carpenter' is brilliant.)  Do yourself a favor and check it out!

// Working on // I've been helping my mom decorate for Christmas (I know I know y'all it seems early, but we're going to be gone this weekend..see below)  and putting together SO many DIY posts... I can't wait to share all of the ideas pouring out of my little brain!

// Looking forward to //  This weekend!  I am a huge fan of Thanksgiving and everything that comes along with it, doing the Turkey Trot 5K, the parade on TV, and the FOOD.  Oh the food.  I could probably exist solely on mashed potatoes (and weigh 500 lbs.)  After our family Thanksgiving we're heading down to Arkansas for Duck Gumbo and hunting... it should be quite the experience!

// Loving // That the holiday season is here!  I am a huge fan of Christmas everything, and one of my favorite things is to shop for gifts for all of my loved ones.  I get SO much of a kick finding the perfect gifts for everyone.  I'm also LOVING the fact that I'm seeing actual commercials again on TV, I had it up to HERE with the political ads.  I've never been so happy to see shamwows in my life.

So what about you, what are you up to today?

The leaves are gone...

Thursday, November 15, 2012

It's that time of year when you wake up to frosty morning and snuggling with Monty under loads of blankets. Today turned out to warm up a bit so I took the pups outside for a little leaf playing and duck throwing. Cami and Vanna (the two labs,) are college graduates of the duck variety and are just chomping at the bit to get down to Arkansas for the start of duck season this weekend. For now, it's so much fun to just watch them wrestling over the bumpers (and watch Monty be confused...he doesn't really know how to be a dog sometimes.) There's nothing like a bunch of dogs to lift your spirits! xoxo Fearsy

Rethinking pop culture crushes...

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

As y'all know, I've recently had the "opportunity" to become intimately more acquainted with my Netflix cue as I remain on the perpetual post graduate/damn this recession job hunt, which for me means essentially binge-watching every television show and movie from the past 30 years. I recently have gotten back into one of my favorite angsty teenage television dramas (and really, which shows weren't in the 90's?) My So Called Life. I started re-watching the show as a little trip down memory lane, and to revisit a little teenage crush. You all know who I'm talking about. Jordan Catalano, the dreamy eyed bad boy heartthrob with the terrible home life (and the connection to everything that is 100% going to get you grounded,) that we all inevitable fall for in some variation as a young and very stupid girl. While the show once again completely drew me in, I found that, as an older and somewhat wiser woman, Jordan Catalano was like, the worst boyfriend ever. Completely aloof, highly unmotivated, cliched dude in a band. Who wrote a love song about his car. He was constantly sending mixed messages, refusing to acknowledge his relationship with Angela anywhere outside of the boiler room make-out sessions, and really just a sucky guy in general. I bet he has a beer belly at the reunion.

This got me to thinking, do my other embarrassingly obsessive teenage dreams measure up to my more mature adult tastes? Let's see...

Benjamin, Gideon, and all of the other alphabetically bible-named brothers of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
These guys literally met some girls at a dance, get in a fight with every man present (including their fathers,) then kidnaps them and traps them in the mountains until the avalanche that they started melts away, all because their brother reads them a bible story.  (I know, I'm still oddly attracted to them too.)  It must be the beards.  But without the beards.... hide your children, hide your wives.

 Josh in Clueless
He crushed on, slept with, and ended up with his stepsister.  Really that should be enough.

Sam from Clarissa Explains it All
Homeboy snuck into Clarissa's bedroom window every day and always seemed to be lurking outside only to pop up at the exact right moment.  Where was the neighborhood watch here?

Dawson from Dawson's Creek
See above.

AC Slater from Saved by the Bell
Literally always called Jessie 'Mama'...either he can't remember her name or has a serious Oepidus complex.

Eric from True Blood
Tricks you into ingesting his blood so that he can perpetually keep track of you, is unable to go to the beach with you and might EAT you if he gets hungry. Makes questionable hair decisions (that bob.) On the flip side... you'll perpetually look tan next to him and those abs...  Meow.

Clearly some things will never change (ahem, beard love.)  Do you ever look back on your teenage crushes with a twinge of embarassment? Do you still love Jordan Catalano? Tell me about them in comments! xoxo Fearsy

A cozy, crafty, season

Thursday, November 08, 2012

Y'all know it's been one of my goals for the year to learn how to knit and crochet and I'm pretty happy to say that it's coming along, slowly but surely.  I've been learning with the Stitch and Bitch books (The Knitter's Handbook and The Happy Hooker) and I highly recommend them!  Debbie is a great writer and provides wonderful illustrations as you learn.  Lately as the weather has been getting cooler I find myself spending a lot of time finding pretty knitting and crochet patterns that I can't wait to make! These are a few of my favorites...

I also can't stop drooling over the beautiful hand dyed wool all over Etsy, these need to get in my knitting basket ASAP.  What are y'all creating right now?  xoxo Fearsy
